FALMOUTH COMMODORE fans, as well as all fans of outstanding defensive baseball, received extraordinary news yesterday when it was announced that Oregon State Beaver short-stop, Joey Wong, will be returning to the Commodores for another season of Cape League Baseball. Anyone who had the privilege of seeing Wong play short-stop for the Commodores during the Summer of 2007 was treated to some absolutely spectacular defense. At times, it seemed that no ground ball hit towards Wong at short would ever make it to the outfield, as Wong dived and tracked down everything hit even remotely in his vicinity. Wong's hitting in 2007 did not overly impress, but his defensive skills were simply amazing. In addition, his speed on the bases put tremendous pressure on opposing defenses throughout the Cape League. With the news that Wong will be exhibiting his dazzling skills at Guv Fuller Field again in 2008, the upcoming Cape Baseball Leage season is off to a tremendous start already.

THE BABE. That's pretty much all one needs to say to conjure up a flood of thoughts relating to the Great American Past-time: Baseball. Here on Cape Cod, residents and visitors have the opportunity to enjoy fantastic baseball in its purest form. When they say "As American as baseball and apple pie," the reference is never more American than when the baseball referred to is that played in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Each summer, the college players that make up ten teams of the Cape Cod Baseball League play the best amateur baseball in the country. One of the ball-parks at which Cape League games are played throughout the summer is Lowell Park in Cotuit, Massachusetts. The park is home to the Cotuit Kettleers, and is the location of a memorial to a baseball story involving The Babe.
On a recent fall evening, I stopped by to visit the park, and discovered a modest connection between the Lowell Park and that most enduring and famous icon of America's past-time: Babe Ruth. No, the Babe did not play any games at Lowell Park, or even in the Cape League. But, as I photographed extensive renovation work going on in the infield of Lowell Park, a gentleman came by to walk his dog as he does each evening. The man's name was Heubert D'Ambrosia. Hubert became a resident of Cotuit, Massachusetts, about two years ago, and is a regular attendee at Kettleer games played at Lowell Park. As we talked about the Cape League and the Kettleers, Heubert related a story about his father, Art D'Ambrozia, that is forever enshrined on the brick esplanade in front of the Alice Lowell gate leading to the field. There, among several memorial bricks from Kettleer supporters, is a brick memorializing young Art D'Ambrosia's brush with none other than The Babe.
As Heubert told the story, his father Art grew up on Acushnet Avenue in Springfield, Massachusetts. When Art was 14 years of age, he and his neighborhood friends would attend baseball games played by a local professional minor league team in Springfield. On one particular day, Art and his friends attended a special game between the local minor league team and the world famous New York Yankees who had stopped over in Springfield while traveling via train to Fenway Park in Boston to play a series against the Boston Red Sox. After the game, Art, like many other kids, ran onto the field to get autographs of baseball players. As Art was roaming around on the field seeking player autographs, he found a bat lying on the ground and seemingly forgotten. Not thinking anything of it, Art picked up the bat, and took it home.
The next day, Art and his friends were playing with the bat on a local baseball field. The bat was so heavy that none of the kids could lift it. An older man came by the park and asked the kids if they wanted him to hit balls to them with the giant bat. The kids said "sure," and the older man obliged. When they were finished, Art brought the bat home.
The next day, the same older guy guy returned to the playground searching for Art. He quickly asked Art where he got the bat that he had used the previous day to hit balls. Art said that he had picked up the bat at the Yankee game two days earlier. Whereupon the older gentleman informed Art that he had been in town earlier that day, and learned that there was a $25 reward for the bat, and that the bat belonged to none other than Babe Ruth. The older man then told Art to meet him at the same playground the next day, and he went off to try to contact the Yankees. The man was able to contact Yankee officials through the local paper in Springfield. The following day, Art met the man at the local ballfield and was informed that arrangements had been made for Art to meet with Yankee officials in Springfield. Art met with the Yankee officials who bought him lunch and treated him very nicely. During lunch, Art returned Babe Ruth's bat. In return, he receive a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth. As for the $25 reward, Art D'Ambrosia said that he didn't want it. He was asked if there was something he might want instead of the reward, and, interestingly, he asked for a bathing suit. So the Yankee officials bought him a black, one-piece bathing suit, of the style worn in that era, that he could wear swimming.
Art D'Ambrosia's return of the Bambino's bat is forever memorialized in a commemorative brick at Lowell Park in Cotuit. Additionally, a review of Babe Ruth's career reveals that in the year that Art D'Ambrozia returned his bat to him, 1927, Ruth set the Major League record for home runs in a season with 60. A record that stood until 1961 when Roger Maris of the New York Yankees broke it by hitting 61 home runs. Thus, the bat that the young Art D'Ambrosia returned to Babe Ruth and the Yankees organiztion likey contributed to Ruth's historic home run feat.
